BLM — Wild Horse Herds and Deception

Photojournalist - Journalist

“Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.” – Aesop

Deception works well. Our reasoning profoundly complacent when necessary. Often deception, or misinformation, is quite beneficial too some. Although, often those individuals who remain on the receiving end of deception, their life difficult at best, in some cases life-threatening.

To America’s Wildlife, sadly, deception leads to their extinction. It is not until deception becomes overpowering, in another words effecting directly far more than just a few, that it is then noticed.

In this case we look at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and what is refereed to as the “87 percent Deception.” Here’s the problem: There exists many decisions, monetary and land usage, based on this 87% of Nevada land that supposedly is Federal Lands, in which a majority belongs to the Bureau of Land Management. But the fact is, and millions upon millions of dollars…

Zoo Blues

I advocate for horses and donkeys, and they are considered more like a commodity than a living being. Seems like our mental acumen when it comes to animals fits in perfectly with Denmark, since both of these species, whether in the USA or Denmark, are considered expendable. Just shameful

Musings from a Tangled Mind

Yes, I realize I’m on another rant…I try not to rant too terribly often but in this case, I simply couldn’t help myself.   I get annoyed enough when someone dumps the cell phone they bought three months ago for $500 just to drop another couple hundred dollars to upgrade to the newest one. Is the new version really that much better than what you had? Or are you just trying to look cool by having the latest and greatest?

So imagine my shock when I recently heard of a Copenhagen Zoo doing pretty much the same thing. Very small, minor, trivial differences. Such as, instead of iPhones that they’re getting rid of, it’s a family of four perfectly healthy lions. Yes, you read that correctly. The zoo euthanized four lions in one fell swoop. Now these lions did not team up to kill their handlers and therefore had to…

Ohio Saves Racing; Animal Cruelty Continues

And here is your proof that we are all are paying to destroy these horses.

Horseracing Wrongs

Sunday’s Akron Beacon Journal tells an all-too-familiar tale (New York, West Virginia, Indiana, etc.) of a “drying up” racing industry being propped by the corporate welfare that is euphemistically referred to as a “state-business partnership.” It goes something like this: Horseracing, especially harness and claiming, is finding it increasingly hard to compete with full-service casinos and state lotteries. But instead of quietly fading away like so many other industries that time passed by, racing demands, arrogantly, to be saved.

In 2011, Ohio racing found itself on the brink. Enter Video Lottery Terminals, and the birth of Ohio “racinos.” From the article: “Thanks to big dollars being pumped into the sport by slots-like video lottery terminals (VLTs) at the state’s horse tracks, the Ohio horse racing industry is rebounding after at least a decade on the wane.” The “big dollars,” a 9%-11% cut of VLT operations, are funneled directly…

State Subsidies (Racinos) | Horseracing Wrongs

You are paying for the horses to run with injuries, drugs and then once they are used up, then thrown on a kill buyers truck and shipped for 30+ hours to Canada and Mexico, with no break, food or water.  Please take the time to attend any and all meetings when these subsidies are up for renewal.

peta - horses aren't machines

Written by:  Heather Clemenceau

It used to be that phenylbutazone was what got a horse disqualified from a race. Dancer’s Image became the only winner in the Kentucky Derby’s 134-year history to be disqualified for using a banned substance, when bute was found in his urine sample after the race in 1968. Two years after Secretariat’s recordbreaking US Triple Crown took the sport to a new level of popularity, the breakdown and death of Ruffian brought on a new era of safety concerns.

Analysis of horse carcasses submitted to the CHRB Postmortem Program revealed that 40.9% of all fatal injuries occurred during racing and training in 3-4 year old racehorses. Injuries, unlike accidents, do not happen by chance. The science of injury prevention has demonstrated that injuries and the events leading up to injuries are not random. Like disease, they tend to follow a general pattern. Studying these patterns…
