Unknowable – \ˌən-ˌnō-ə-ˈbi-lə-tē\ lying beyond the limits of human experience or understanding

1 Corinthians 13:11

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

Most if not all of us have relied on our parents to teach us the unknowable ways of the world, the ability to learn how to behave, interact and discover the world around us along with clear instructions on how to be decent, caring, loving individuals.

Religion indeed has played no small part in our lives as well, more in some than others. Religious instruction in my childhood was based on humility, compassion towards all beings, i.e., how to be a caring neighbor, a law abiding citizen and more importantly respect for others but especially to animals. Thanks to this knowledge I have become an adult that not only my mother is very proud of, but Heaven above as well.

Like many people of my age, the 50’s and 60’s in America were filled with Sunday and Wednesday church services, without fail.  The goal of any religion of choice was to direct our lives to be more in line with the teachings of Jesus, and to use his wisdom as the moral compass, blueprint if you will, in which to lead those lives.

Here are just a few scriptures taught in bible study classes in America:

To adhere to the Golden Rule, “Luke 6:31 records Jesus saying,
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

Romans 12:10
“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

Phillipians 2:3
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves”

Titus 2:7
“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness”

1 Corininths 10:33
“…even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.”

These are the words that guide the American people to make good decisions and more importantly deeds through action when coming up in the world, to adhere and practice this wisdom daily whether at school, church, but especially in the home and abroad.

In those words of wisdom were instructions on how to navigate the unknowable – the pitfalls of the world, rely solely on our ability to make good choices, to defy decisions of moral turpitude. Our Republic continues to rely on the Biblical Principles of the Ten Commandments as the basis for which American Jurisprudence relies heavily upon.

“Democracies and republics are not Biblical principles, but instead styles of governance. The principles being referred to that are in the U.S. Constitution are how our laws were inspired by the moral principles of the Ten Commandments, and how the Blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity (principles of freedom) were inspired by the biblical principles of free will, individualism, personal responsibility, moral conduct, and so forth.”  U.S. Constitution and Biblical Principles By Douglas V. Gibbs

George Mason quote.png
However, there is something quite amiss within our government today.  Republican Politicians must have forgotten much of what they were taught as children within the confines of the unknowable, yet as adults continue to behave in a manner more aligned to the legal principle of moral turpitude:

“”an act or behavior that gravely violates the sentiment or accepted standard of the community””

Moral Turpitude. A phrase used in Criminal Law to describe conduct that is considered contrary to community standards of justice, honesty, or good morals. Crimes involving moral turpitude have an inherent quality of baseness, vileness, or depravity with respect to a person’s duty to another or to society in general.

I care not to dwell upon the moral or immoral righteousness of others, except when it directly affects people that I deeply care about……my family, friends and more importantly the air, water, environment and animals that are directly impacted by the moral decrepitude that has invaded our social consciousness along with our conversations.

The People’s Will is Sovereign and yet, continually ignored in lieu of corporate greed, pollution and debased cruelty against people of color, animals and our environment. We were warned repeatedly by Jefferson.

“Jefferson wrote in 1825 to William Branch Giles of “vast accession of strength from their younger recruits, who having nothing in them of the feelings or principles of ’76 now look to a single and splendid government of an Aristocracy, founded on banking institutions and monied in corporations under the guise and cloak of their favored branches of manufactures commerce and navigation, riding and ruling over the plundered ploughman and beggared yeomanry.”
The end of democracy…(Spurious Quotation)

Republican’s (which includes the 45th President) force their will upon us daily, a continued assault on our guarantee under the Constitution of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness which were assuredly paid in spades by our ancestors with their blood, sweat, treasure and tears to assure our freedom to be just that, free from tyranny.

Black, brown, yellow or red, all gave some, some gave all. Each and every American today has suffered to make America in the image of a godly being, and which has closely aligned to that of a egalitarian society. Egalitarian Society is in my opinion, one in which all prosper, not just a few.

Michael Moore’s “Where to Invade Next” clearly shows that everywhere else in the world that abides by America’s gift of clarity by our founding fathers works,  but just not here. That is shameful and absolutely should never stand!

But continued assaults, using ungodly laws, illegal appointments and legal doctrine using a debased ideology of how we should return to “days gone by” that were immoral and unjust to this day demand not only justice but outrage!

From authoritarian President Trump implying that law enforcement should injure individuals while putting them in their vehicles (anyone remember this….the Presumption of Innocence, “the presumption that anyone accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty” to VP Pence encouraging the demise of Planned Parenthood and the many benefits it offers to women and children. This administrations continued assault on women, children and minorities looks nothing like near our weekly instructions in the bible. This is NOT what a Christian looks like, it resembles absolutely nothing that I was taught in Sunday School or in the Church.

Another example, by installing Gorsuch to the bench and ignoring the Will of the People, Jefferson warned us again…..

“The Constitution… meant that its coordinate branches should be checks on each other. But the opinion which gives to the judges the right to decide what laws are constitutional and what not, not only for themselves in their own sphere of action but for the Legislature and Executive also in their spheres, would make the Judiciary a despotic branch.” –Thomas Jefferson to Abigail Adams, 1804. ME 11:51

“The monetization of laws, health care, education, pre-election campaign, etc. puts citizens in obviously unequal conditions.” I would go a step further.  Privatization of our Commons, such as public lands, roads, elections, water, prisons, healthcare and now with DeVos, education, has left our democracy shattered thanks in part to our dishonored Congress, Supreme Court and Executive Office.

“Tragically, this wealth is being stolen in the name of economic efficiency and global competitiveness. As the disparity between the world’s richest individuals and everyone else grows, a massive takeover of the commons is occurring. Through privatization schemes, land grabs, excessive copyright and patenting claims, no-new-taxes policies, neocolonial globalization and the gutting of government services, we are losing what is rightfully ours. These radical policies inflict economic pain but also diminish the natural world, our sense of community and the ability to participate in decisions affecting our future.”

From 2011 Headline:

Study Confirms Wealth Distribution in United States is Most Unequal Among Industrialized Nations Democracy Now

This is not the America I grew up in. It looks nothing like the America that I know and love after the 60’s age of enlightenment. We can thank our current Republicans hiding behind Christianity under the guise of evangelists for this now diluted form of governance, along with Nixon, Reagan, and Bush Sr and Jr. Their crimes are vile and reprehensible.

Dispute this truth…..

Comment by Ronald Waller, “Why I don’t Vote Republican”

“During a civil political conversation “I made a comment recently where I claimed that Republican administrations had been much more criminally corrupt over the last 50 plus years than the Democrats. I was challenged (dared actually) to prove it. So I did a bit of research and when I say a bit I mean it didn’t take long and there is no comparison.
When comparing criminal indictments of those serving in the executive branch of presidential administrations, it’s so lopsided as to be ridiculous. Yet all I ever hear about is how supposedly “corrupt” the Democrats are. So why don’t we break it down by president and the numbers?

Obama (D) – 8 yrs in office. Zero criminal indictments, zero convictions and zero prison sentences. So the next time somebody describes the Obama administration as “scandal free” they aren’t speaking wishfully, they’re simply telling the truth.
Bush, George W. (R) – 8 yrs in office. 16 criminal indictments. 16 convictions. 9 prison sentences.

Clinton (D) – 8 yrs in office. 2 criminal indictments. One conviction. One prison sentence. That’s right nearly 8 yrs of investigations. Tens of millions spent and 30 yrs of claiming them the most corrupt ever and there was exactly one person convicted of a crime.
Bush, George H. W. (R) – 4 yrs in office. One indictment. One conviction. One prison sentence.

Reagan (R) – 8 yrs in office. 26 criminal indictments. 16 convictions. 8 prison sentences.

Carter (D) – 4 yrs in office. One indictment. Zero convictions and zero prison sentences.

Ford (R) – 4 yrs in office. One indictment and one conviction. One prison sentence.

Nixon (R) – 6 yrs in office. 76 criminal indictments. 55 convictions. 15 prison sentences.

Johnson (D) – 5 yrs in office. Zero indictments. Zero convictions. Zero prison sentences.

So, let’s see where that leaves us. In the last 53 years, Democrats have been in the Oval Office for 25 of those years, while Republicans held it for 28. In their 25 yrs in office Democrats had a total of three executive branch officials indicted with one conviction and one prison sentence. That’s one whole executive branch official convicted of a crime in two and a half decades of Democrat leadership.

In the 28 yrs that Republicans have held office over the last 53 yrs they have had a total of (a drum roll would be more than appropriate), 120 criminal indictments of executive branch officials. 89 criminal convictions and 34 prison sentences handed down. That’s more prison sentences than years in office since 1968 for Republicans. If you want to count articles of impeachment as indictments (they aren’t really but we can count them as an action), both sides get one more. However, Clinton wasn’t found guilty while Nixon resigned and was pardoned by Ford (and a pardon carries with it a legal admission of guilt on the part of the pardoned). So those only serve to make Republicans look even worse.

With everything going on with Trump and his people right now, it’s a safe bet Republicans are gonna be padding their numbers a bit real soon.
So let’s just go over the numbers one more time, shall we? 120 indictments for Republicans. 89 convictions, and 34 prison sentences. Those aren’t “feelings” or “alternate facts.” Those are simply the stats by the numbers. Republicans are, and have been for my entire lifetime, the most criminally corrupt party to hold the office of the presidency.

So those are the actual numbers.”

Very well said! add one more fact to this list…the largest economic damage that has been done to the American people has been solely on the shoulders of Republicans. 9 of the last 10 recessions have been caused by this party.

Lastly, Republicans are working furiously to implement a plan to exterminate the last of the Great American Icons, our taxpayer owned Wild Horses and Burros, through a devious plan to kill well over 67,000 with a bullet or worse, ship to slaughter.

Slaughter in Mexico and Canada are excruciatingly painful ways to kill a sentient animal and cruel beyond imagination.  Don’t believe me….watch these videos and tell me I am wrong.

Defense Horse Canada png

Any one person and I mean anyone who states they are a Christian, believes in America and considers themselves a devout patriot and yet, continues to allow this party carte blanche to maim, kill and destroy any animal, including humanity, our habitat which includes our air, water, environment deserves to be removed from any sphere of influence immediately.

EPONA Vehemently Opposes Trump Administration!

Let me explain why this page is now discussing politics so vehemently and give the evidence as to why we will oppose this administration. Each link will take you to evidence to explain this position.

For well over 16 years, let me repeat this…for 16 YEARS advocates (along with very minimal bi-partisan efforts,) have worked tirelessly, begged, pleaded, cajoled our Congress to put protections in place to stop wild and domestic equines from not only ending equine transportation as a toxic food commodity to Mexico and Canada, which is shipped out to the unsuspecting Asian and European market, but to also put in permanent protections to end equine slaughter and exploitation in our country once and for all and to redress the many violations to animals in general. The vast and overwhelming majority of opposition? Republicans.

We have asked our Congress to stop the cruelty and torture of Tennessee Walking horses, and it has fallen on deaf ears repeatedly. Equine Preservation of North America – EPONA and many others do not believe that any animal should ever be tortured as a luxury food, nor for a ribbon, prize or prestige. One of the people that has held up legislation for the PAST Act is Marsha Blackburn (R) out of Tennessee. She will now sit on Trump’s transition team. Other top picks is a Who’s Who in animal cruelty and exploitation for profit.

Republican State and Federal representatives continue the assault on our public lands, public lands where most, if not all, of our wild equines’ live, along with other vulnerable populations of animals which are virtually without any protections in place against the alt-right agenda which historically is made up of an all-white male coalition. The Alternative Right are also entrenched in many of our police and sheriff departments, non-governmental orgs, and federal agencies, they just happen to hide it very well. However, with the recent exposure of officers killing or maiming minorities, without compunction, and usually acquitted of those crimes by jurors which are solely made up by usually an overwhelming white majority and picked by the officers’ defense attorneys’, will walk away unscathed. Same outcome is happening with violent animal abusers.

Recently, there was an important article which exposed many of dangers posed by men that are entrenched in the Alternative Right movement, also know as “patriots.” Many of these so called “Patriots” are also responsible for Trump Phenom. These men have become more of a danger in our society due to long standing indoctrination by our educational system which teaches them that the only protected class is the white males, which claim to have founded this country alone, which of course is nonsense.
This group is extremely dangerous to minorities including blacks, women, children, but also animals and more dangerous than any Islamic group combined. Incredulously, they are our fathers, brothers, uncles, our fellow citizens, and live in every community in the Nation. EPONA has proven repeatedly that this demographic poses real and viable risk to us all, but more importantly to innocent and defenseless women, children and animals.

One of the most disturbing acts perpetrated on an animal is how a mare is bred.  It is extremely cruel, and as usual, perpetrated by mainly white individuals who are seeking to find a goldmine in racing, (in which these young animals are ran to death,) rodeo, urine, blood, tissue, etc. Mares are bound, usually by both legs in order to allow a dangerous stallion to mount her, in which he becomes so aggressive, the mare is harmed irreparably.  These hostages have no voice and these acts are authorized by our own government, using our tax dollars. PMU Mares are also victims of exploitation and abuse.  These mares are kept in a constant state of pregnancy, and once they foal, their baby is shipped off to slaughter.

Honestly, this is just the tip of the iceberg.  There are many, many more ways equines and other farm animals are exploited for profit, and there are really no minimum care requirements in place to protect them from this continued exploitation, cruelty or abuse.

With the previous evidence that has been presented here, and the clear and present danger from this new administration, it will be crucial to become the ears, eyes and voice for these animals and people.

Epona will never stop exposing equine exploitation for profit, nor will it stop exposing the criminal elements in our government. If you are not interested in learning about these schemes, then please go where you can. It is going to take every one of us to speak out and against any and all atrocities against not only our innocent animals, but women, children and minorities that are at greater risk now than ever before.

Equines are instrumental in so many aspects of our current lives and were just as important in the lives of our ancestors. Previous generations sacrificed much in order for us to enjoy the freedom and liberties we have today. They would be as shocked as we are to see how farm animals suffer, maybe more so. According to the USDA, over 10 billion land animals are killed for food in the United States alone.  It is difficult to pinpoint a time when we considered them “companion” animals instead of their current classification as “commodities.” This designation of “livestock,” “property,” or “recreational” has put farm animals and others in harm’s way for far too long.
Designation of farmed animals at the National, Federal, and local levels of government prevent these animals from receiving humane treatment and that is wrong. These classifications were designed to prevent farmed animals the guaranteed protections that our companion animals currently enjoy. These classifications were put into place so that their exploitations for monetary gain could continue without pressure or interference from regulatory agencies.  Their lives will never include protections against abuse until it is demanded by all of us. Until we speak up and out and demand justice for their continued health and well-being, they will continue in a never-ending cycle of abuse and cruelty at the hands of man.
Because most of these animals are listed as food animals, which also includes our equines, those guilty of abusive practices in slaughter plants and the transport industry are often walking free from their terrible crimes. (An exception should be equines due to the inability of the USDA to inspect their flesh. Today, they are not considered food animals in the USA although they are still transported for slaughter for human consumption.)
There are no few enforceable protections in place when cruelty or abuse occurs to docile, innocent farm animals. Most slaughter plants are now “self-regulating” with fewer USDA govt. inspectors in place. These types of crimes under “The Humane Slaughter Act” of 1958 go unchecked the majority of the time. If there are any prosecutions or convictions under this Act for those crimes, I have not found them.

Current animal abuse laws that protect companion animals such as cats and dogs do not apply to farmed animals. When crimes against “livestock” do occur, they are often not pursued as a criminal offense because of the “property” status classification. This negates the court’s ability to act in a manner that we have all come to expect when cruelty is involved. It’s as if our current system cannot see that farm animals have the ability to feel and experience pain and, therefore, do not warrant protection from inhumane treatment.
Most offenders end up with light sentences or monetary penalties, most of which are not enforced. As advocates, we find this incomprehensible and we cannot understand how our criminal justice system fails on stopping this blatant type of animal abuse. Current laws now in place allow these animals to fall through the cracks — equines especially. Equine exploitation happens in so many different ways it is sometimes difficult to determine which laws to implement and which regulations those crimes should fall under. Although it is more often than not clear that inhumane treatment and neglect should be pursued, the cases are often convoluted because of classifications and even the alleged purpose behind the animal’s existence (e.g., companion animal, work animal, rescue, slaughter-bound).
Now imagine if equine slaughter should resume in the US once again? If the USDA were allowed to inspect horse meat in September of 2015, who would oversee the slaughter process to ensure that cruelty and abuse will not occur? If there is a lack of inspectors now, who would bring these crimes to bear? The clear answer is no one.

Equine Exploitation: Examples Without Consequences
Horse tripping is considered a sport, donkey basketball in schools is an acceptable form of abuse, teens do not see that riding such a sensitive animal like a donkey is any different from a ride at an amusement park; Rodeo is also an accepted form of entertainment by our culture. This includes cattle prods into the anus of a horse or bull in order to make them angrier in order to get a better performance for the crowd; cancer causing drugs routinely given to race horses which cause their bodies to “break down” at young ages to either die or ship to slaughter; cruel nail padding placed on hooves in order to make that animal walk an over-exaggerated gait called the “Big Lick”; wild horses and burros rounded up and given dangerous, untested pesticides in the form of infertility drugs that disrupt their quality of life, or worse, shipped to slaughter; equines crammed in trucks too small to accommodate their size, shipped without food and water upwards of 34+ hours en route (which also includes pigs, cows, and sheep); horses forced to stand day and night to collect urine which creates dangerous drugs for the pharmaceutical industry, in a continual state of pregnancy, with their foals (babies) shipping to slaughter; mares ripped from their new infant foal to accommodate feeding a more expensive foal, with the new foal shipping to slaughter to use their flesh as a fashion accessories in the form of a purse or gloves; roundups with helicopters and contractors paid obscene amounts of money, using our tax dollars, pushing wild animals into corrals in which they break legs, necks or die. When they become incapacitated they shoot them on the spot with the government’s full and complete acknowledgment and approval. American horses transported out of the country to Japan in live animal exports in order to feed other countries including Russia and shipped out of Texas illegally. Wild Horses and Burros shipped to slaughter, even though they are protected under law!  The top 1% receiving taxpayers subsidies and responsible for the removal of wild horses.
This suffering is inexcusable. Deaths at slaughter plants, commercial factories, and large-scale industrial farms are avoidable. The weakest among us are not considered in a favorable light and are not afforded the most basic protections that we should expect in the 21st Century.

More times than not, perpetrators of animal welfare crimes receive light sentences or are simply fined — even these minimal actions are rarely enforced.  Even when courts are presented with solid evidence clearly detailing cruel and abusive criminal acts, violators will walk free with only minor infractions. Due to this lack of enforcement, there is simply no protection in place when cruelty or abuse occurs to farm animals. In some instances, such as with transport, the courts’ hands are tied altogether – the USDA regulates transport violations.
And the sad reality is this.  Animal abuse and cruelty, whether it is a farmed animal or a domestic pet leads to further abuse and/or violent acts.  This excerpt taken from the Sentencing Memorandum for Jackie McConnell regarding his criminal case for horse soring states it perfectly;

“Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), animal abusers are five (5) times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four (4) times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse. The FBI has recognized the connection between a history of animal abuse and the commission of violent crimes since the 1970s. Other research has demonstrated consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of more common forms of violence. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association considers animal cruelty to be one of the diagnostic criteria of conduct disorders.  “Abusing an animal is a way for a human to find power/joy/fulfillment through the torture of a victim they know cannot defend itself.” ”  Page 14.

world watching
The USDA is notorious for lack of enforcement: cases go years with no resolution and fines are often never collected. In an Animals’ Angels investigation, documentation was uncovered proving that the USDA had 100’s of cases with a multitude of violations within each of those 100’s of cases involving the transport of horses for slaughter to the Cavel slaughter plant in Illinois from 2004 to 2007. Rather than shut the transport companies or violators down. According to the report, the USDA did not shut them down. Instead, simple fines were imposed but only in some cases.  Most offenders received nothing but a warning letter. And in those cases where fines were imposed, it took years just to get a hearing and a judgment!
We cannot comprehend how our criminal justice system and those tasked with upholding animal welfare laws could fail these beings by allowing classifications to prevent justice from prevailing. The laws that currently govern how these animals are to be treated continue to allow them to die violent, avoidable deaths. A dear friend once stated to me that “When an animal dies such a violent, cruel death, that fear is infused into their flesh and we are eating those molecules.” It is no wonder our population suffers from chronic illnesses.
The sentences are laughable and we see these monsters walk out of the courtroom completely exonerated or with a slap on the wrist. Advocates are shocked to the core at these light sentences. It is difficult to understand how our criminal justice system can continually fail these innocent beings. The current system inherently allows the animals to fall through the cracks.
The Bull who cried
A bull in Hong Kong was reported to cry and beg for his life http://bit.ly/1Nprh4F
Along with equines, bovines (cows), bovines (sheep), porcine (pigs), and chickens all fall into these categories under this misguided “classification” system and are considered as “property” rather than thinking, feeling beings that can most certainly endure pain, sorrow, and grief. This “inanimate” designation alone keeps them from receiving the justice they so richly deserve and need.
Because animals are given the label of “property,” and are treated as such, they are considered as inanimate “things” that have no feelings or rights of protection. When such labeling is assigned to animals, our legal system and the enforcement agencies in place to protect them cannot prosecute under cruelty laws but instead must follow property laws.
Why is it that we advocate’s can clearly see that this is where our judicial system fails our animals but the legislators cannot? How is that we can clearly see the evidence at hand that unequivocally shows clear signs of abuse or cruelty, but our lawmakers cannot?
Sadly, with case after case, we see the utter and complete failure of our judicial system, government agencies in protecting animals that cannot protect themselves from cruel, criminal humans. And yet, we cannot lay full blame on the Judges or the court system as a whole. Our judicial system is unable to serve harsher penalties for such crimes due to these inane classifications and because of the courts’ limited ability to pass judgments that would prevent future abuse, these abusers never receive the maximum sentence under the rule of law. It is the legislators who are at fault for not defining more clearly that animals are living, sentient beings who deserve humane treatment in all facets of their lives and their death.
By now you are in full agreement with me and asking what is it that you can do to change it. There are many things you can do as an individual and most certainly as a cohesive group. Start donating to groups such as the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Mercy for Animals, and Animals’ Angels so their evidence can be presented in courts and to lawmakers around the country to show why our justice system should work for all animals, not just a few.
The more evidence these groups can show to the courts and legislators that mandatory protections need to be in place to protect these sweet animals from cruelties perpetrated on them through no fault of their own, the sooner we can protect the generations to come from such horrors.
Start with your local and state laws. In a wonderful book by Julie E. Lewin called “Get Political for Animals and Win the Laws They Need” gives you a comprehensive manual that will show you how to fight to win to change any and all laws that are not working. These laws are in dire need of change and with a concentrated effort by us all, we can implement strategies that will win a voice for all animals. It is an easy to understand, step-by-step manual that will teach you and others how to approach your local government, officials and representatives in Congress in order to create new laws that stand up for our any animal, including our farmed animals and equines.
There are so many advocates that are clearly very vocal and speak out for animals when given the chance either in articles, forums or comments. Now you will finally have the power to change those thoughts and expressions of intention into powerful concrete actions which will give us all the ability to put in place meaningful protections that will speak for those that cannot.
Let’s finally change their world for the better in order that our children and grandchildren are not forced to see the images or hear the horror stories we are subjected to daily.
What you will allow, is what will continue

Quid Pro Quo

I want to talk a bit about a lot of things, but in particular Equine Advocacy and the internal frictions within advocates/advocacy groups. While I might be considered a newbie, during my four years (so far!) in equine advocacy, I have been an active member of many secret groups, and groups in general, with the purpose of working on solutions to the issues facing our beloved horses, donkeys and mules.  I’ve worked in collusion with many groups to stop the transport and slaughter of equines. Each and every time the attempt was made to plow through data to understand this issue, the work would inevitably suffer due to internal conflict. Advocates would snipe at other advocates over petty differences or ideas, or worse, groups that profess to want the issues solved, refused to work together because of mainly personality or ideology differences. Nothing gets solved this way.

This includes seasoned advocates who have been doing this work for many, many years, yet still believe that only they alone can solve the problems. They cannot. It is too big of an issue. It is going to take each and every one of us as a collective, cohesive, well-oiled machine with grit and determination to put a stop to the systematic destruction and exploitation of our equines. Positive change will never happen if advocates continue to bash other advocates over minuscule issues that would better be solved over time by creating a forum to discuss their best ideas and run with them.  Issues that could be solved if they would just talk to each other in a civil manner.

Egos, big egos, constantly get in the way and nothing gets accomplished because of it. I recently experienced this in a public group and was sadden to see the public remarks made about long time WH&B groups and advocates that are by no means perfect, but put on their boots daily, for years on end, to do something, anything, to end the long-standing cruelty faced by our wild and domestic horses, donkeys and mules. It isn’t right, nor is it fair, to believe that these people or groups do not have the animals well-being in mind just because they have an opposing view, when in reality, they most certainly do. They show that daily through numerous efforts, just not as a cohesive unit.

There are so many great advocates that have a lot to offer with incredible “real world” job skills that could be put to use, but are repeatedly overlooked, shunned or put on fabricated “do not trust” lists, simply because they would not fall in line with agendas put out by certain groups of advocates. Usually, the discourse is so petty that is it laughable. Sometimes it is as simple as a misunderstanding or due to the inability to get behind some of the ideas, suggestions or directives of long time advocates, or worse, stealing an idea and promoting it as their own, without giving credit where credit is due. Then you have Wild Horse advocates that will not support domestic horse slaughter issues, and vice-a-versa? Or won’t support burros. Why? The last destination for all equines is slaughter, that is the commonality, yet factions exist. Why?

I continue to see seasoned advocates ignoring newbies, or even long time advocates that want to help further the agenda of saving these animals (wild or domestic), however, have not been in it for very long and do not have a grasp of the entire subject matter. They repeatedly ask for clarification or help in understanding how they can help, and are either ignored and/or treated indifferently. They are rarely educated by senior advocates. Why? Obviously, the more advocates involved, the better. Why not educate new and renewed advocates?

When a newbie does work up the courage to jump in by asking questions, making comments or suggestions, they are ignored, belittled, or worse, removed. We must remember that fresh eyes are important to any issue. But yet, it continues to this day. The majority of advocates are women –strong women with a passion for creating change.  To see strong, determined women treat other groups with a majority of women with the same passion, expressed desire and intention to get this changed by hook or crook, demeaned or admonished for those efforts is wrong and makes me not only incredibly sad, but angry. This is NOT who we are!

Mainstream groups that I have supported started with very small numbers four years ago. By spreading their blogs, Facebook pages, etc., old and new advocates working tirelessly daily get their words out to the general public, they are now large conglomerates due to the efforts of ALL of us spreading their message. They did not do it alone — we made the sometimes painful and soul-wrenching effort to share their horrendous piece of vital information in hopes of teaching others about this cruel and secret business. Each day, it has taken away a piece of my soul in doing that. Each time that I shared horrific information or graphic photos with family or friends, I lost their valuable connection or association simply because they could not bear to see it, thus blocked me or my personal posts. Some people just don’t have either the time or courage to fight back.

These “conglomerate” non-profit organizations’ donors have increased their purse strings, thanks in part to the participation of new (and old) advocates seeking desperately for an answer on how to end the exploitation, but yet, four years later, absolutely nothing has changed. New folks that cannot take the time out of their busy lives to learn about this issue throw their hard earned money at these groups in hopes that they will finally get a solution once and for all. However, another year passes and they have failed to do that, why?

Because they are not one voice, one intention, one direction. They are not cohesive for the simple fact that just like the BIG orgs, they have to feed us the discourse in order to continue to rake in donations. Why can’t they say, “Hey, put us out of business. Help us shut down our doors!” Wishful thinking I suppose. I guess if legislation does finally pass, they would have to shut down those doors, now wouldn’t they? I would have to logically assume that the reason they are not working in a combined effort to shut this issue down once and for all would mean a loss of income, for all involved on both sides of the issue.

The SAFE Act failed simply because of agricultural factions in Congress want to see the 50K WH&B’s now in holding go to slaughter and to of course, allow horse slaughter to resume as a commodity in the USA. That is it.  That is the truth of the matter. Congress only wants to solve this issue on behalf of their AG constituents and remove the burden of care of these animals from their budgets. Ranchers involved either privately, or within the safe confines of the Bureau of Land Management, absolutely WILL NOT share one blade of grass of our Public Lands with these protected animals. But that was the idea wasn’t it? To put so many in holding that Congress would be forced to do something, anything, to rid themselves of the tax burden of supporting these animals for the rest of their lives, which could be upwards of 30 years. This will absolutely be their downfall. There are advocates heading their way that will put them out of office once and for all.

The reason that there are 50K in holding is because it was, and still is, being entirely fabricated by the BLM in order to get to the end result…..slaughter. Speaker John Boehner held the SAFE Act up in a committee, and would not allow it to come to the floor for a vote in order to make it fail. And it did. Do you realize that this was the 14th attempt to stop horse transport and slaughter? For 14 years advocates have been fighting our Congress to protect domestic and wild horses and donkeys from slaughter, and every single time it has failed. Why? The only assumption one can make is that there is no money to be made if the issue is solved, either from non-profits or from pro-slaughter interests. Leaves a disgusting taste in my mouth just putting those two groups together in a sentence.

I watched the live feed for the Nevada RAC (Resource Advisory Council to the BLM) meeting and was so grateful that advocates spoke out so eloquently on the reasons why wild horses and burros should be saved. They spoke for me, all of them. When they spoke, they were spilling out all of the words that I wished I could say in person. Their only goal was to speak for these animals and tell our government and these ranchers that sit on that RAC that this is not who we are as a Country.

We owe our allegiance to the only animals that fought with and carried our soldiers out of harm’s way, carried our ancestors to a better, brighter future, delivered goods, helped the Native Americans…I could go on and on to the many ways they have contributed their blood, sweat and tears to our way of life. We OWE them our loyalty and protection.

Congress agreed with us and recognized their worth in 1971 by putting protections in place to prevent what is happening right now, this very moment. What happened, where did it all go sideways? The Bureau of Land Management was put in charge, run by ranchers who know that it is not in their best interests to protect them. That is exactly why we are where we are today.

The suggestions made at the RAC meeting by ALL advocates fighting against WH&B’s demise were splendid, however they fell on deaf ears. Snide remarks were reported by advocates that were at that meeting, remarks made from the people that sit on the RAC. Derogatory remarks about the WH&B’s were made by the very same people sitting on that RAC and profess to have their best interest in mind. What is wrong with this? How many of those RAC members are also receiving grazing allotments from us, the American Taxpaying Public? How many are getting grazing fees? How many are ranchers? And they are in charge of submitting suggestions to the BLM? The Bureau of Land Management Advisory Council, the very council that is supposed to have ALL of our interest in mind is made up entirely of pro-slaughter factions, with what I believe is just one anti slaughter advocate (50:1, sound familiar?) This would not stand in a corporate nor court room setting. These people are NOT my peers.

Let’s get real honest here about the PZP debate. If people are desperate to end the torture and destruction of animals that are well loved, cherished and admired by well over 80% of the 300 million people in the USA, and a crumb was offered in hopes that this known government entity would finally leave them in peace if only allowed to dart WH&B’s by a drug, would you take that peace offering? Did we believe that if we agreed to the PZP that their suffering would finally be over? Absolutely and many have, including myself.

What would you be willing to do so in order to allow these animals to roam peacefully on their mandated lands, free from harassment or from the cruelty of long term holding? To no longer allow WH&B’s to be subjected to long, horrendous runs that are usually performed in the dead heat of summer, many mares with small foals at their side and hooves fall off due to that run and last by not least by far are terrorized by a helicopter? You would cave. Most people would. If the hierarchy is made up entirely of white ranching cowboys in cowboy hats, what choice do you really think we have? You bend or lose more horses/burros into the deep, dark den of inequity in which they will no longer be found or accounted for. This is what we have all understood in advocating for these animals. That once WH&B’s enter into this hell, none escape with any real quality of life or any life at all.

I must admit, I bought it, hook, line and sinker. That is until I did the research. Compromise is great, but not at the extinction of a natural, living being that is not only protected by law and has absolute priority over Public Lands but in addition, adds more value to that environment where they live, survive and ultimately die than take away from it.

EPA has stated in their assessment of PZP that they cannot guarantee that PZP won’t affect other wildlife populations because once a wild horse or burro in nature, either unnaturally or naturally dies, the nearby endangered species would most certainly eat that animal’s flesh and ingest the PZP, rendering that endangered species sterile as well. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Hell yeah, a peace pipe indeed.

This is unconscionable. We know how this will end. The PZP will be the new scapegoat and the new excuse will be “but we tried!” Oh well, let’s get them squared away once and for all time. This is just another ruse being perpetrated on good, decent American people, using their hard earned money, by a government agency that has shown nothing but absolute contempt for these animals and have absolutely no compunction in stating that fact in a public venue.

They continue to blatantly lie about populations of WH&B’s, their locations, long term holding counts, etc. and we are now not only completely distrustful of anything this agency puts out, but we are pissed off and tired of it.

Those of us that have seen the “Preponderance of Evidence” regarding this rogue agency and their 50+ year record of abuse and cruelties against this benign animal have absolutely had enough. We can attest to the fact that well over 2 million WH&B have been destroyed, disappeared, or put into long term holding over that time frame. Gone Baby Gone…..forever — if this doesn’t reek of extinction; I have no clue how to explain it to you.

How in the name of God can upwards of 2 million animals disappear off the face of the Earth in a 80 to 100 year window? I am not a mathematician, but clearly if 100 years ago there were 2 million mustangs that roamed North America and there are fewer that 25,000 in the wild, with 50,000 in holding, what am I missing here? Where did they go?

This agency most certainly does not have these animals’ best interest in mind. This is a clear “switch and bait” tactic used by self-serving ranchers that run the BLM. Their offer to inject or sterilize mares and stallions using a drug that is listed as a pesticide…let me repeat that…a pesticide, is not a generous offer. It reeks of extortion.

In order to stop this agency from zeroing out entire herds, once again, their solution to advocates and mainstream groups is of course to give them only one choice and that choice is take the drugs/surgery over the roundups. Not acceptable. This solution is not acceptable and the pretense in this case is clearly to obfuscate and scapegoat the animals and advocates once again.

Speaking of surgeries, why would any DVM worth his salt allow a surgery such as complex, dangerous ovariectomy to be performed in unsanitary conditions, outside in a dirt lot or field, with no anesthesia and no follow up care? No one in the real world would allow this, other than DVM’s that are A) Ranchers or B)DVM’s that could not get a job outside of public service.

Most of the Bureau of Land Management is run by ranchers, you know it, I know it. And those government employees are willfully disregarding any and all science proving that these animals are not the true cause of the degradation of public land. Only 3% of cattle that run on those lands benefit the American meat-eating public. Most, if not all of these cattle are sent to overseas markets. We won’t even benefit from allowing these ranchers to utilize our money or the Public Lands. They are happy to take taxpayers money in subsidies, but those of us that give our hard earned money to these ranchers, which in some cases makes them extremely rich, get absolutely nothing in return.

Now, add into this mix the other animals that survive in these environment and most certainly eat resources as well, such as Elk, Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer and others, and you truly have the bigger picture of what is happening on the land but of course, that information is also ignored. It is always the poor equines that get the short end of the stick.

Many ranching families believe they are entitled to call the public lands their own and they pass this entitlement down from generation to generation.  Because of that misguided, ingrained belief system implemented at a very early age, they plow ahead in order to accomplish their long held generational belief system that by teaching their children to consider these animals as “vermin” or “destructive” they feel that their only recourse now as adults is to remove ALL horses and burros in order to protect their “Pot of Gold” or in other words “public land” subsides. The Bundy family comes to mind. Just look at the recent refusal to accept government orders to remove cattle that are illegally grazing on public lands. There are many like the Bundy family, but are not so stupid enough as to step into the media spotlight for all to see.

But we know the truth and have not been subjected to the repeated rhetoric ingrained into our consciousness over the years like the children of ranchers. I liken the conditioning of these children who are now adults, to the “Stockholm Syndrome” Not familiar with this term? Let me enlighten.

“Stockholm syndrome can be seen as a form of traumatic bonding, which does not necessarily require a hostage scenario, but which describes “strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other.” One commonly used hypothesis to explain the effect of Stockholm syndrome is based on Freudian theory. It suggests that the bonding is the individual’s response to trauma in becoming a victim. Identifying with the aggressor is one way that the ego defends itself. When a victim believes the same values as the aggressor, they cease to be perceived as a threat.” Wikipedia

If parents are telling their children that these animals are “bad” “rats of the west” “vermin” or “trash animals” and must be treated with disrespect and cruelty, then that is exactly what any child with those kinds of messages will grow up and believe. The cruelty and abuse of these animals have endured, day in and day out, for years on end by these ranching families will continue. That is the insane familial legacy these adult ranchers now implement. If they are subjecting these animals to daily abuse their entire life, and cannot see that is is unacceptable and inhumane, how are we ever going to change that belief system? We can’t. These attitudes, behavior, and belief system towards these animal as adults is why we are at such odds with such people. And where are these adults now? Some are now employees of the very government agency that is pushing the extinction of these animals.

rope and tir

Why is it that we know the truth and they do not? Because science and ecologists have done the research and tell us what is really going on, whereas the opposite occurs in the ranching family communities. They stick to what they think they know is best for these animals instead of understanding the science, thanks in part to their repeated familial conditioning.

This is a true public trust issue. Many, many reports have been issued stating that there is not an overpopulation of Wild Horses and Burros, but just the opposite. When you have a ratio of 50:1 50 cattle to every one horse, you have to be either incredibly naive not to see that the majority of damage is caused by the grazing of cattle and sheep, which are the real cause of the destruction and pollution of public lands. Or so ingrained and conditioned in a belief system through brainwashing and the repeated messages of fathers and mothers that dished out that misinformation at a young age, this is the only truth that is out there and that those non-ranching, eastern folks must be liars.

Another revelation I found recently is a letter from a group called The Public Lands Foundation. The Public Lands Foundation is made up entirely of present, former and retired BLM employees and they have a lot to say about this issue. Matter of fact, the letter that they sent out to the BLM Advisory Council in 2009 is very telling and exposes this group for what it really is, an extension of the BLM WH&B plan of extinction. You should be very alarmed at this recommendation. Think about this for just one moment. A group of former, current and retired employees with the BLM, giving a very clear message to that employer, suggesting that they remove all WH&B’s and put them in a “National Range.” Wait? What??? No bias there.

The fact that their suggestion to the current sham of a BLM Advisory Board is one of creating a “National Range” in order to corral WH&B’s in just one area and do entirely away with every Herd Management Area in the West is something that not one of us should ever support nor turn a blind eye to.

If we were to go along with this suggestion, and they pick and choose which animals could be placed on that range, can we believe that they would put back all of the horses and burros in holding now? When they say “acceptable number” how many would that be and what would happen to the rest that were not chosen for that “National Range?” What do you think? Think they would be able to adopt them all out? Of course not.

Here is a portion of that letter:

“We believe a long-term solution should begin with a grass roots effort to bring all of the parties together to determine the acceptable number of wild horses and burros that should be maintained in the West, and to discuss the creation of National Wild Horse and Burro Ranges to accommodate this acceptable number of animals. The National Ranges would be managed for the maintenance and protection of wild horses, burros and wildlife. The existing wild horse and burro Herd Management Areas on BLM public lands would be eliminated, and the animals moved to the National Ranges.”

EPONA was designed to teach — to teach all that want to learn the information on this page in order to contribute to making a life long difference for these exploited animals. Through articles, blogs, photos, etc., of these mainstream groups on EPONA, the only goal is to give the reader a better understand of this enormous, complex, dirty secret.

I choose to include all that are speaking up for our horses and donkeys. I can’t know what the internal factions are until I study and research them, and what that does is take my time away from speaking and educating others about this very important issue and what really matters – and that is the continued safety and concern for ALL our horses and burros, both wild and domestic, and protecting them for the ages from slaughter. Thank you for your loyal support of this page and please keep trying, pushing and insisting that this gets solved and soon. They are running out of time.

“What You Allow, Is What Will Continue”

The War on Women and Horses

I was reading “Objectification is Why Horses Are So Easily abused” and I realized that the new 2014 Congress about to be seated will have the Republican Party holding all of the power, AGAIN.  How’s that worked out for the American People previously???  We most certainly know how that works out and continue to bear the brunt of those disastrous decisions to this very day.

We have longed known that the majority of Republicans in power are “older, white males” and this particular demographic has repeatedly shown their “true colors” through their misogynist agenda.  Believe it or not, there is a real “War on Women” indeed.

What strikes that point home was seeing the 2008 Republican National Convention video.  Even though they showcased numerous women on their platform to show the American Public that “Hey, see, we are really behind women, equal pay, etc.”, you can certainly ascertain from that video that is not the case at all nor the reality on the ground.  Be sure to note the many “white hats” that are being waved and especially note who is waving them.

2008 Republican National Convention

It has long been documented that this particular party feels a need to regulate reproduction decisions for women and will not control the non-stop attacks regarding this issue until they see birth control removed completely as well as “Roe vs. Wade” repealed. Their bullying efforts are usually pushed through by creating unwanted or unneeded legislation, in hopes that they can stop women from making personal decisions about their bodies. Let me repeat……THEIR bodies.

At this point in time, women still have the legal right to determine those decisions, however, when this 114th Congress is seated in January, you can bet that it won’t be long before the same individuals that now have and previously enjoyed the “majority”, will be even more relentless on their agenda regarding reproduction and equality.  This agenda has been obvious for years and again, they will make a concentrated effort to overturn any and all previous laws regarding women’s reproduction rights, and will most certainly push those same agendas at a faster pace than ever before. It is disturbing that this particular societal demographic should believe in any way, shape or form that they have a right to say anything, EVER about women and their reproductive rights, either now or in the future!

Now let’s talk about our equines. If you are a regular reader of this blog, then you are well aware of the ongoing attacks and exploitation that are taking place against our Wild/Domestic Horses and Donkeys. And you are also well aware of the fact that the majority of decisions coming out of the Bureau of Land Management are also made by “white, older” male ranchers that are the Majority in the West, and who are the majority in control of this agency.

However, you would never know it, there are two women in charge! Sally Jewel is in charge of the Department of Interior and Joan Guilfoyle is a Division Chief for Wild Horses at the Bureau of Land Management.  Advocates were beyond thrilled that these women were appointed to such important positions within these agencies and believed wholeheartedly that now that women were appointed, surely things would now most definitely change for our equines! Simply put, most women are caring and compassionate when it comes to the defenseless and will usually speak out and against treating any weaker species with  utter contempt, which this agency has shown repeatedly under this and previous administrations .  But we were wrong, dead wrong.   You do know what a Judas Horse is right?  That is what these appointments were, Trickery and Obfuscation.

This was just another inadequate attempt by government handlers to show that they truly care about women, equines and this issue. I am sure that they thought that by inserting these women into important policy making positions, advocates (of which are mostly women) would rest assure that these women would turn this agency around finally!  That by appointing women, advocates would believe they, of all people, would be implementing policies that have our equines best interests in mind, and that advocates would now “feel good” about these appointments and take some of the intense pressure off of this agency.

Since these women have been appointed, neither of them have exhibited typical traits that most other women carry, that of compassion,  concern or sensitivity.  These two women continue to exhibit that same mentality as all previous appointees, that of absolute indifference or contempt towards wild horses and burros, and continue on with the blatant and obvious inadequate actions which include ignoring advocate letters, refusing to place advocate appointees on the BLM Advisory Board and continue on with the very same “mindset” as the “all white, older male” ranchers, miners, Big Energy and many, many others that exploit public lands for profit. That these animals do not matter and should not be protected.

watch out for false prophets

These agencies also consider our  Wild Horses as “vermin” and an invasive species that should have absolutely no rights to occupy public lands, nor should these animals compete with ranchers and their “vested interests” by sharing the land, even though there is a law that protects them and they have absolute “priority” over public lands, not the other way around.

There is now a huge push to start interfering and regulating the reproduction cycles of Wild Mares through PZP, which is a known pesticide and will have forever lasting effects, all negative, on future reproduction cycles in these mares. The research is very clear, once these animals are repeatedly darted, they become sterile. The Cloud Foundation, and several others have completed their assessment of PZP and have written numerous articles stating the dangers of using PZP. Here is another scientific report that will help understand the dangers of using an unsound drug on Wild Horse herds. We have long time advocates also acting like the “Judas” horse by trying to convince other advocates that this is the only way forward, the only way to save our equines from this agency for future generations.  It is a lie. What is truly bothersome is to hear that mainstream advocacy groups are also agreeing with this rhetoric and even willing to point out which horses need to be sterilized over others.

Wait…..What????? So I guess by picking and choosing which animal is going to be sterilized in order to preserve a better specimen for future generations and by sterilizing the “lesser” horse, you have to ask this question, “Who made you God?” What is wrong with this scenario? Clearly animal eugenics in action and extremely disturbing behavior by people who profess to love these animals. It is truly sad to see that some horses are valued more than others.

In addition, this same agency (The Bureau of Land Management) has proposed to spay mares in the field. Even as a layperson, I know that performing a complex operation such as an ovariectomy on a wild animal in the field is dangerous and unsanitary.   It is not only dangerous for the animal, but also the person performing such an insane procedure, in dirty conditions.

The sad reality is that a recent HSUS article mislead so many people by backing up the Bureau of Land Management’s rhetoric that there are too many wild horses on public lands and the need for PZP to keep those populations in check. National Academy of Science report given to the Bureau of Land Management in 2011 has pretty much been ignored by this agency since its release.  The NAS stated “there is no evidence” of wild horse overpopulation in their report titled, “Using Science to Improve the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program A Way Forward”

Essentially, the Bureau of Land Management has ignored scientific studies repeatedly, as well as refused to allow any count whatsoever on how many cow/calf pairs are now occupying public lands through grazing permits at any time.  How can you remove horses/burros when you have no idea which animal is causing the majority of damage on public lands?  You can’t, again, trickery and obfuscation.

Clearly with over 50K now in holding facilities, there is a very real risk that if the continued recommendation from the very vocal pro-slaughter President of the BLM Advisory Board, Boyd Spratling wants the slaughter of those 50K in holding,  it will be just a matter of time before he and others convince Congress that it cannot maintain this many animals indefinitely and that slaughter is the only way forward.  By essentially storing over 50K, this was a planned, well executed man-made disaster in order to justify the wholesale extermination of these animals once and for all. So is the plan to sterlize using PZP.

And the reality is this, with the continued round ups, and Joan Guilfoyle admitting that they are now overcapacity in their holding pens and cannot take in one more horse, yet they continue weekly with roundups, the more important questions is why??? Why continue with roundups when they KNOW for a fact that they are out of room? Clearly, they really need to get Congress’ attention by overpopulating these facilities to show that there is a problem and must be addressed immediately.

Demand that your newly elected representatives start speaking for these sentient, gentle animals. Similarly, as women with the power to reproduce and bring life into the world, it is our obligated, maternal duty to protect those that are weaker as well. Please stand up for these “hard earned” reproductive rights that we currently enjoy and that so many women fought for in the the past.  And please stand up and speak out for future generations of Women and Wild Horses/Burros.
